Evenwood is a former coal mining village, and makes a good base for walkers and cyclists. Take a trip to Raby Castle, with its panoramic views and herds of deer, or visit Durham Cathedral, which is a short drive away.
Bishop Auckland has a splendid marble and limestone chapel and stained-glass windows that relate to stories of early Christian saints. Barnard Castle, 15 miles, has shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy.
In Evenwood there are some local shops but if you wanted to go to a supermarket (Sainsburys/Tesco etc) just over 4 miles away there is a retail park in St Helen Auckland on the A688 (post code: DL14 9AE).
